Why is Thanksgiving Disappearing?
As most of us know, Thanksgiving is a holiday that comes around once a year, and the holiday is necessary in our culture. However, Thanksgiving seems to be losing its charm as the years pass. While we don’t exactly know why it’s losing that charm, some people on the web have their theories.
Miranda Marquit
Miranda Marquit on Live Rich, Live Well believes that people don’t acknowledge that the meaning of Thanksgiving is to be thankful; she believes that some may care only about eating Thanksgiving dinner to receive their energy to head out the door and go Black Friday/Christmas shopping.
Miranda also believes that individuals compare themselves to others who have more stuff than them, which leaves them feeling discouraged. They might think that owning as much stuff as others have would make them feel better about themselves. They might think owning at least one special thing others have might make them happier too.
Miranda thinks that people should look at what’s important in life, think about what they enjoy, and be thankful for what they have instead of mourning over things they think would make them feel more special. She also thinks that celebrating Thanksgiving rather than fretting about Christmas shopping, and shopping for yourself all the time would make them acknowledge that too.
Xenia Gazette
Xenia Gazette on Xenia Daily Gazette thinks that Thanksgiving is fading away because it is being subsumed by Christmas; it is replacing a long-standing national holiday and its “public thanksgiving” dedication with a few month-long pitch for Christmas and its sales.
Ever since 2019, According to Xenia, Christmas merchandise has been sold and promoted weeks before Halloween, and there were extended Black Friday sales from October to Christmas Eve.
Patti Fralix
Patti Fralix on It’s in the Sauce believes that the commercialism of Christmas is taking over Thanksgiving. She says that Thanksgiving decorations are hard to find in homes and stores. She also mentions that the Christmas trees have been in malls since September. She thinks that people should celebrate Christmas only in December, rather than combining Thanksgiving and Christmas into one.
