This holiday wasn’t always filled with candy, roses, and basic human decency. It was first called Lupercalia, and was very dark. The holiday even though the history was still loved by some people. This holiday was said to be around from the estimated 6th century B.C. The festival began at Lupercalia cave with the sacrifice of one or more male goats and a dog. After the sacrifice of the animals they would feast, they would cut up the goats that were sacrificed, then they all undress, and the men would pick women’s names from a jar, and with the animal hides they would hurt the women. Somehow through all this pain a lot of marriages, and love came from this tradition, and a lot of the women would stay partnered with the men for every Lupercalia. Later on they decided to keep their clothes on but still hurt women, but of course fully clothed. Even though that doesn’t take away any horribleness from this holiday. So back in the day instead of trying to show love or kindness, they instead hurt the women unclothed, until they realized that part and only that part was too weird, and horrible. Imagine being born during this time and you had to hit a woman to show her that you loved her or imagine being the woman. It was considered purification, good health, and fertility. The colors used for Valentine’s day are red, and white. It is to represent the sacrifice of animal red, and white is to represent the milk used to clean the red. (That’s the only good way I can put it, but if you don’t understand what red is meaning then feel free to search up what they did to animals, and such, but be weary) Yes, milk, they used milk to clean up the red. It was supposed to represent new life and procreation. Mind you, some people privately still celebrate this tradition instead of the Valentines day we know, and some people are perfectly okay with it all.
