This morning, February 2, 2024, the Groundhog Day ceremony was held at Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania to determine if we’re getting an early spring, or a longer winter.
Before the announcement, Tom Dunkel, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club President, told the audience that he held a cane, which gave him power to speak the language of groundhogs. He also mentioned that Phil, the groundhog, would help him choose which scroll to use to predict the weather for the future.
The crowd helped fire up the groundhog by chanting his name; “Phil! Phil! Phil!”
A club member pulled the groundhog from the stump and held him over it.
Vice President Dan McGinley read the chosen scroll to the crowd, which said that an early Spring is on its way.
Most of the other groundhogs made the same prediction as Phil’s, so an early spring is definitely possible this year.
