There is a difference between gossip and rumors. Gossip is things that might be true while rumors are lies made to hurt or discourage someone else. Here is an example or gossip: “I can’t believe the Raiders lost to Blue field by 18 points at the game yesterday. Did you hear that one of the Raider football players made a foal by making one of the other teams players fall and scrape his arm?” Here is an example of a rumor: “Oh my god did you hear about the game last night?! I heard one of the Raider’s made one of Blue fields’players fall and shatter their arm.” A rumor is very exaggerated and most of the time is not the truth. Sometimes people make rumors to bully another person; they spread it around to all their friends and tell their friends to spread it to even more people. When you start a rumor or just gossip in a negative way about someone else it affects their life. Not just the part of their life you’re making fun of because you can’t be selective when you are making lies about someone, it just hurts them in many ways. Some people have killed themselves because of a rumor that they started to tease and pick on them. It is highly recommended to not spread rumors about anyone because it all in the end can cost a life to be lost. A student had said “Gossip can be true and not true it is either 100 percent right or 100 percent the opposite direction. People say something about someone that’s not even true and by the time they figure out it has already spread.” A teacher said “Don’t believe everything you hear, because everything you hear is not always true.”

One of my favorite books is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. The agreements basically represent a Code of Conduct, and one of them is “Be impeccable with Your Word.” This means to never use the words you speak against yourself or other people. As I practice this agreement, I often find myself with nothing to say because what I would have said, would have been negative. However, I find I feel better if the words I say and think are positive rather than poison.
