Green-brier county got its name from the well known and beautiful Green-brier river. A big attractions in West Virginia know for its kayaking and camping availability.
The word “Green-brier” is referring to the thorny vines of a genus smilax that are known to be throughout Southern Appalachian. It’s been called the “Green-brier” since the 1830’s.
In 1777, Green-brier county was made from the western parts of Botetourt and Montgomery counties.
