Why is Valentine’s Day a Thing?

(It’s Practically Useless)

I know what you’re thinking, “Who broke this girl’s heart? Why’s she so hostile?” and I’d love to give you an answer, but there isn’t one. No, I didn’t get my heart broken and spend months crying in my bed, and no, I’m not hostile. My overall opinion is Valentine’s Day is literally useless. I have never understood the concept of only one day being dedicated to your significant other; why not treat them as if every day is Valentine’s Day? Every day you should wake up thankful for that special someone in your life, not just give them chocolates on February 14th. Now, I know some of you are reading this and thinking to yourself, “Well, I’m thankful for my significant other every single day! What’s this girl talking about?” and the answer is, yes, you may be thankful, but are you showing your gratitude? I feel as if that’s a question that we have to sit back and ask ourselves a lot of the time.

Something about gifting chocolate and flowers just doesn’t sit right with me.

Yes, I’m thankful for the gift, but why not give me something useful? A nice new top, phone charger, or maybe even a pen that writes smoothly would suffice for me. However, I do understand that those boxes of heart-shaped chocolates are something people look forward to every year. So then I got to thinking, what is the purpose of manufacturing chocolate around this time of year? Well, during the Aztec time, chocolate was seen as an aphrodisiac food, and it was said that it contained a substance that made the gifter more desirable to the giftee. I mean, I guess there is a particular reason that chocolate could be seen as *important* for a Valentine’s Day gift, but as I said previously, there are so many other useful and more practical things.

If you are in a relationship and are one of the lucky ones this Valentine’s Day, I want you to stop reading this and ask yourself, “Am I showing my gratitude to the loved ones in my life?” If you’ve had to think of an answer for more than 10 seconds, odds are, you’re not. To me, effort is one of the most important things in any relationship. Whether that’s a romantic relationship, a friendship, or even the relationship you have with your mom/dad/guardian, it’s imperative to give effort. Valentine’s Day typically is a day to celebrate your significant other, but it doesn’t always have to be like that. You can celebrate your friendships and family relationships, too. Then again, you should celebrate your loved ones every single day, not just on February 14th.

No, I don’t think love is disgusting or it doesn’t exist. I believe love exists in all forms, I just don’t believe that it should be celebrated 1 out of 365 days of the year. Maybe you don’t agree, but we can agree to disagree. Maybe you’ve been with your S/O for years and you love a day just dedicated to them, that’s your opinion,  but this is mine: Valentine’s Day is practically useless.
