The Greenbrier West student body voted in 18 representatives to the student council on September 15, 2016. Some of the representatives have served in student government since middle school, but for several, this is their first year serving their classmates.
This year’s Student Council plans to be the most productive student council at Greenbrier West in many years. The Council has already had two meetings, and one is planned to occur soon. The council has discussed many pressing issues, such as the chili cook-off and the potential of getting a vending machine in the school that will be available to students during the school day. However, this could be a harder task then it seems. Since the new regulations prohibiting most “junk food,” many changes have been implemented, including a list of foods that are acceptable and unacceptable. This list proves to be a major speed-bump for anyone who is wanting to have snacks at school. Student council plans to overcome this is by potentially getting a vending machine that contains approved snacks and beverages, but each item must be approved by the school board. The theoretical vending machine would contain fresh fruits and vegetables, crackers, pretzels, and perhaps even low-fat yogurt. Sources higher-up claim that if a vending machine is placed in the school, it will bring down the number of students who eat school lunch. For this reason, no action has been taken at this time toward getting a vending machine.
This year’s student government is as follows:
Freshmen: Kenzie Stidom, Emma Osborne, Kaitlyn Hughart, and Ryan Taylor.
Sophomores: Chasity Turner, Dan Nutter, Makenzie Vestal, and Noah Arbaugh.
Juniors: Logan Foley, Tiffany Fox, Caraline Coughlin, and Colby Bevins.
Seniors: Amber Clark, Dwayne McMillion, Lauren Alderson, Ashtyn McClung, Shannon Brunzo-Hager, and Mickaela Reed.
Please let us know what you would like to have in a vending machine here at school, or let one of your representatives know.
