This year’s Veteran’s Day program at Greenbrier West High School was an emotional and informational presentation led by ROTC Captain, Dwayne McMillion. McMillion captured everyone’s attention by commentating throughout the event, listing photos and videos of veterans and their commitment to our freedom.
The event started with the Greenbrier West’s color guard ‘presenting colors’ as the band played The Star Spangled Banner. The choir sang a moving rendition of In Flander’s Field, then Dwayne took the reins again and presented famous and local veterans.
JROTC Battalion Commander Amber Clark read two poems: Red, White, and Blue and Still A Soldier.
Student Body President, Ashtyn McClung introduced Kelly Goddard from Rainelle’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and on the behalf of GWHS, presented a check to contribute to the reconstruction and renewal of the VFW building that was destroyed in the flood over the summer.
To wrap up the ceremony, Mr. Goddard introduced the veterans who attended, told their stories, and even cracked a few jokes. This years ceremony is one to write down in the books. Everyone, including the students, seemed to have a great time.
